The New Seven Wonders of the World were chosen in a global public vote announced in 2007. Below are all seven monuments, with the country they stand in and factual context on what each one is.
China — Northern China
A network of fortifications built and rebuilt over centuries by successive Chinese dynasties, with the best-preserved sections dating from the Ming period. Its walls, watchtowers and garrison passes run for thousands of kilometres across mountains, steppe and desert north of Beijing.
Jordan — Ma'an Governorate, Jordan
The rock-cut capital of the Nabataean kingdom, carved into red sandstone cliffs and reached through the narrow Siq gorge. Petra prospered as a caravan hub on the incense and spice routes, and its facades blend Hellenistic architecture with local funerary tradition.
Brazil — Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
An Art Deco statue of Christ completed in 1931 on the summit of Corcovado mountain, overlooking Rio de Janeiro. Built in reinforced concrete and clad in soapstone mosaic, it stands about 30 metres tall on a pedestal above Tijuca Forest.
Peru — Cusco Region, Peru
A 15th-century Inca citadel set on a ridge high above the Urubamba valley, combining terraced agriculture, precision dry-stone masonry and astronomical alignments. It was largely unknown outside the region until it was brought to international attention in 1911.
Mexico — Yucatán, Mexico
A major Maya city of the Terminal Classic and early Postclassic periods, dominated by the stepped pyramid of El Castillo. The site also holds a great ball court, the Temple of the Warriors and the sacred cenote that supplied and sanctified the settlement.
Italy — Rome, Italy
The largest amphitheatre of the Roman world, inaugurated in AD 80 and able to hold tens of thousands of spectators. Its tiered travertine arcades and underground hypogeum supported gladiatorial games, staged hunts and public spectacles for centuries.
India — Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India
A white marble mausoleum commissioned by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for Mumtaz Mahal and completed in the mid-17th century. Its symmetrical charbagh garden, reflecting pool, inlaid stonework and central dome are a high point of Indo-Islamic architecture.
